The Nurmelilled (Estonian for wildflowers) blanket is a light and colourful summery design inspired by flowers and greenery. The blanket makes a great design feature for your house, garden or picnic.
The blanket is worked in squares. The size of the blanket is easily adjustable by making more or fewer squares. The squares are worked in rounds from the centre of the square. At the centre of a square is an abstract flower or a plant worked in mosaic knitting technique, surrounded by a lace border in the main colour worked with smaller needles. The lace border can be omitted.
Work with double pointed needles or circular needles using the magic loop method if needed.
The sample was made in acrylic yarn, Caron Simply Soft. Different yarn weights and fibres can be used. Using different fibres affects the size of the blanket and the amount of yarn needed. Due to the several techniques used (mosaic and lace), it is strongly advised to make one square as a swatch, steam block or wash and block it out. You might need to go down in needle size for the lace border if it does not lay flat after blocking.
The gauge is not important for this project. Choose an aran / worsted weight yarn and matching needles. Using different fibres affect the size of the blanket and the amount of yarn needed.
One square is approximately 47 x 47 cm / 18.5 x 18.5”
Mosaic square without the lace border 34 x 34 cm / 13.4 x 13.4”
Approximate amounts needed for one square:
Main colour A:
90 g / 3.2 oz = 153 m / 168 yards.
Contrasting colours B, C, D, or E (petals + core):
35+3 g / 1.2+0.1 oz = 60+5 m / 65+6 yards.
For joining the 4x4 square blanket and icord:
Colour A 150 g / 5.3 oz = 255 m / 278 yards.
For joining the 3x4 square blanket and icord:
Colour A 120 g / 4.2 oz = 204 m / 223 yards.
Total consumption for a 4x4 squares blanket:
A 1590 g / 56.1 oz = 2695 m / 2946 yards;
B, C, D, E each colour
152 g / 5.2 oz = 260 m / 284 yards.
Total consumption for a 3x4 squares blanket:
A 1200 g / 42.2 oz = 2033 m / 2224 yards;
B, C, D, E each colour
114 g / 3.9 oz = 195 m / 213 yards.
The pattern is charted and written.
The pattern has been tech edited and test knitted.
